Too Many Missing Links?

In the new age of online journalism, what constitutes citing a source? Is it simply stating a name of a fellow journalist (most often the "source" of the news item) or is it citing the publication as well or providing a link to the source's site? Or is the proper way to cite an online source a combination of all three? Most media publications follow the unwritten (and written) rule of providing a link to a sourse, but not everyone agrees that this is necessary.
